Florence

Where to Go in Crete Senesi, One of Tuscany’s Dreamiest Landscapes

The visit to Florence is a must for anyone travelling to Italy. It is the capital of the Tuscany region and it was the cradle of the Renaissance in the second half of the 14th century. It was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy at the end of the 19th century and the seat of the first national parliament. Its population is of about 400,000 inhabitants and it is one of the most popular destinations for the tourists who decide to visit Italy. Today, its historical city centre is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and the place where some of the most important art museums can be found in Italy. It is the case of the Ufizzi Gallery, which holds paintings by Leonardo Da Vinci (‘Adoration of the Magi’), Sandro Botticelli (‘The Birth of Venus’) or Titian (‘Venus of Urbino’); the Gallery of the Academy, which holds the famous ‘David’ by Michelangelo as well as many palaces supported by the Medici dynasty. They were a rich family that ruled the city for more than three centuries and that were the greatest instigators of art during the Renaissance. Discover the magic in Florence’s streets and squares while you are accommodated in Villa Dievole, located 60 Km away from town. From there, you can travel to Florence and let yourself be amazed by its Gothic cathedral – one of the biggest churches of Christianity. The name of the temple is Saint Mary of the Flowers, although it is most known as the ‘Duomo’. It is easily recognised by its dome, which is 114 metres high and was built by Filippo Brunelleschi and also by its tower – the Campanile – which is 84 metres high. The other characteristic image of Florence is the Ponte Vecchio over the River Arno, a stone bridge with hanging houses where butchers and slaughtermen lived in the 15th and 16th centuries. Those places are now occupied by jewellers and goldsmiths. The Piazza della Signoria is also a place of pilgrimage for tourists visiting Florence. It is one of the most cheerful spots in town and where some of the most famous constructions in Florence can be found: the Palazzo Vecchio with its own copy of the ‘David’ by Michelangelo at the entrance, the Fountain of Neptune or the Tribunal of Merchandise. You can find tips and clues by the hand of Bodega Dievole so as not to miss anything in one of the most beautiful Italian cities, which is also the capital city of Tuscany and the border of the rich wine region of Chianti. You will know what to visit, where to be accommodated and, of course, where to taste the savoury Tuscan gastronomy accompanied by the famous Chianti wines.
