In general, it’s not always easy to predict what type of wine while be most popular in a given year. Often this prediction does not only depend on the trends of the moment but also on the tastes and purchasing power of the consumer.

Trends in the wine world are often influenced by thoughts and opinions expressed by experts in the industry, for example food and wine journalists and critics who write for wine guides, and also by the wine companies’ marketing strategies, which they create so that their products gain some sort of recognition and appreciation in the market.

That said, going online and reading some articles written by the most influential members of the industry, we have discovered what the wine world trends will be for 2018 in Italy. Let’s take a look!

  • FIVE WINE WORLD TRENDS IN 2018

    One of the most popular vine varieties from last year is undoubtedly the Sangiovese, selected for being the most popular variety in Italy, because some of the most loved wines in this country are produced from these grapes, such as the Chianti Classico DOCG.

    The Sangiovese is part of several Italian DOC and DOCG wines but the new trend is to drink it pure to fully appreciate its refined tannins, its intense smell and how versatile it is with traditional Italian dishes.

    WINE FROM TRADITIONAL AND NATIVE VINE VARITIES

    The high number of traditional and native vine varieties in Italy’s regions, a huge asset in our country, are gaining more and more interest from the consumer and are simultaneously becoming very successful on the national and international market. “Drinking a Km0” – just like eating a Km0 – preferring wines from the local vines of the region where you live is thankfully becoming a popular habit in Italy.

     

    ROSÉ: THE MOST LOVED BY THE PUBLIC, BUT THE MOST DIFFICULT TO RECOMMEND IN A RESTAURANT

    Over the last year there has been an increased consumer interest in rosé. It’s just a shame that this interest has not encouraged restaurants to put this variety of wine on their menus. Why? It seems that restaurants find it difficult to recommend rosé to their customers. Maybe because they do not know enough about it and when you go to a restaurant you simply order white wine with fish dishes and red with meat dishes? We shall see if the wine world trends of 2018 succeed in putting rosé back on the menu, as it deserves.

    NATURAL, BIOLOGICAL AND BIODYNAMIC WINES

    Biological, more than a trend, must be considered a true way of life. It seems to be so because there are more and more consumers – critical and conscious – who want not just sustainably farmed food and ingredients, but also wines produced following set standards of grape growing, according to biological and biodynamic beliefs.

    These wines aren’t always easy to enjoy because they look and taste a little different to what we’re accustomed to in the market, but they are definitely very interesting and deserve a place on this list of trends in the world of wine in 2018.

    LIGHTER WINE FOR QUICKER DRINKING

    Finally, we have to mention a trend which has been catching on for a few years now, which is the choice of consumers to drink lighter and more drinkable wine, even to have as an aperitivo, for example. In this category, white or red, fruity wine with bubbles are the most prevalent, especially among a certain age group which has recently entered the world of wine or does not necessarily drink structured and full-bodied wine at any event.
