Amongst the major wine events in Italy each year, Benvenuto Brunello is one of the most exciting previews! This preview (or in Italian anteprima) marks its 27th year presenting the famous Brunello di Montalcino wines in southern Tuscany.
Benvenuto Brunello is organized by the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino; since its DOC recognition in 1967, it has served as a promoter and protector of the wine and its characteristics. This is the first Brunello fair of the year, and held in Montalcino, it’s also the most representative of the production area.
Benvenuto Brunello will take place in Montalcino from February 15-18, 2019 in the picturesque setting of the Complesso di Sant’Agostino, centrally located in town (behind the church of Sant’Agostino and not far from the Fortezza). Given that Montalcino is mostly pedestrian and parking is at a premium, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and prepare for the long walk there!
Previously only for journalists and trade, the event celebrates its third year of opening its doors to the public (only on Sunday and Monday). Tickets can be purchased online from the website www.consorziobrunellodimontalcino.it (you’ll find a specific section and link at the top of the home page). Friday, February 15 is reserved for accredited journalists only, while Saturday is for both producers and journalists.
The wines being served at the 2018 edition are the Brunello di Montalcino 2014, Riserva 2013, Rosso di Montalcino 2017, Moscadello and Sant’Antimo by the best producers of the region. Of wines to taste, don’t miss the Dievole family’s Podere Brizio and Poggio Landi labels.
Among the event’s key moments, you’ll find a conference, a ceremony awarding stars to the most recent harvest and a prize ceremony for the Leccio d’Oro award – and don’t miss the famous tile-placing event! Every year the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino commissions a commemorative tile for the wall of the city’s 13th-century Town Hall. The tiles are commissioned to different artists every year, featuring renowned names in art, culture, design, and fashion. The tile’s theme is chosen specifically by the artist with the sole constraint of having to be related to Brunello di Montalcino, besides indicating the number of stars given to that year’s harvest. In 2018, the tile ceremony was conducted by Sting, who also gave a small and intimate concert in the town’s newly restored theatre.
